Sandpiper Bay, which installed new greens on all 27 holes, was named Myrtle Beach golf course of the year.
Sandpiper Bay Golf Club and two-time U.S. Open Champion Curtis Strange are doing their part to grow the game of golf.

Strange, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, will be hosting a pair of free clinics at Sandpiper Bay, the reigning Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owner’s Association Course of the Year, on Saturday, May 21.

A junior clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, and Strange will talk to participants about the sport and provide swing tips to help them build their game. The juniors will then split into groups and receive additional, free instruction from area PGA professionals. Sandpiper Bay will provide clubs to any kids who don’t have them.

A free adult clinic will follow at 12:30 p.m. Strange will address that group and provide swing tips in advance of a Nike Golf Demo Day from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Players will be able to hit Nike’s newest clubs, and Strange will be on-site all afternoon.

Currently an announcer for ESPN, Strange won 17 PGA Tour events, including consecutive U.S. Opens in 1988 and 1989. He was a five-time Ryder Cup team member and captained the American squad in 2002. Strange, who was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2007, topped the PGA Tour money list in 1985, 1987 and 1988.

Strange is appearing at Sandpiper in conjunction with the PGA Free Lesson Month and Play Golf America promotions.

Anyone planning to attend should call the Sandpiper Bay golf shop to RSVP at 910-579-9120 or email golfshop@sandpiperbaygolf.com. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lounge chairs.

Sandpiper Bay is a 27-hole facility located just across the state line in Brunswick County, N.C. Home of the Sand, Piper and Bay nines, the course has been a North Strand favorite for years. Sandpiper, which completed a conversion to miniverde greens last year, is regarded as one of the area’s most playable designs.
